The search for missing 5-year-old Kayden Nolen came to a heartbreaking end on Thursday, April 10, when his body was discovered in a pond near a Memphis apartment complex, according to a statement by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
Kayden, a young boy with autism, had been reported missing the day before from the Residences at Lakeview Apartments in Memphis, Tennessee. His disappearance sparked a large-scale search effort involving local police, rescue teams, and community members.
Who Was Kayden Nolen?
Kayden Nolen was a 5-year-old boy with autism, known to sometimes wander off. On Wednesday, April 9, he was reported missing around 4:30 p.m. after his aunt, Lakevra Brounson, woke up from a nap and realized he was gone. Although it wasn’t unusual for Kayden to step outside briefly, this time he didn’t return.
19-Hour Search Ends in Tragedy
The Memphis Police Department, supported by the TBI, launched an intensive 19-hour search across land, air, and water. Unfortunately, by Thursday afternoon, they confirmed that Kayden’s body had been found in a pond within the apartment complex.
The police shared the sad news on Facebook:
“Our hearts are broken. This is a tragedy that has deeply affected not only Kayden’s loved ones but our entire community.”
Family and Community Reactions
Kayden’s grandfather, Benjamin Pace, spoke emotionally to reporters:
“Pay attention to your kids more. Look out for them more. In a blink of an eye, your child can be gone. You’re never overprotective — you’re just being protective enough.”
The TBI and Memphis Police both extended their condolences to the family, urging the public to respect their privacy during this time of grief.
Officials Respond
In their joint statements, officials appreciated the community’s efforts and compassion, even though the outcome was not what anyone had hoped for.
“Though the outcome is not what any of us had hoped for, your dedication and compassion will never be forgotten,” said the Memphis Police.
The investigation into the circumstances of Kayden’s death is ongoing. No foul play has been confirmed at this time.
