Police Crack Down on Illegal Fire Lane Parking Outside Home Depot: $125 Fine for Violators

Police Crack Down on Illegal Fire Lane Parking Outside Home Depot $125 Fine for Violators

Poughkeepsie, New York – Drivers are being strictly warned against parking in fire lanes, even for a few moments, or they’ll be facing a $125 fine, according to a new announcement from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department.

The enforcement comes after an increase in the number of people illegally parking outside Home Depot, especially in fire lanes, which are critical for emergency services access.

Fire Lanes Are for Emergencies – Not Convenience

Police are stressing that fire lanes exist to save lives. In case of a fire or medical emergency, first responders need clear, uninterrupted access to the building. Even brief delays caused by parked vehicles could lead to serious consequences.

“Don’t be lazy, find a parking spot,” said Detective Gregory Drobot of the Poughkeepsie Police Department.
“These areas are designed for those crucial seconds in life-saving emergencies. Don’t park in these lanes even if you’re just ‘running in quick.’”

No Exceptions: Even One Minute Can Get You Fined

Authorities are making it clear — it doesn’t matter if you:

  • Park with hazard lights on
  • Are just picking up an order
  • Are a delivery driver
  • Think you’ll be “back in a minute”

If you park in a fire lane, you will be fined. The $125 fine falls under Town Code § 110-6E, and repeat offenders could face additional penalties.

This rule applies to everyone, including delivery drivers and shoppers loading goods into their vehicles. If your vehicle doesn’t have flashing blue emergency lights, the fire lane is off-limits—always.

Confusion Over Home Depot Parking Fees Cleared Up

The announcement comes shortly after confusion about Home Depot’s parking policy went viral on social media. A report by Pro Tool Reviews claimed the store would raise parking fees from $2 to $5 in some cities, with certain discounts for high-spending customers or loyalty members.

This sparked online backlash and even a call to #BoycottHomeDepot. However, the retailer has confirmed that this was an April Fool’s joke, and no such fee increase is happening.

“This is not true,” a Home Depot spokesperson told The U.S. Sun. “This was apparently an April Fool’s joke that Pro Tool Reviews posted without our knowledge.”
