We take a lot of steps to protect our valuables—locking our doors, setting up security cameras, and securing our cars. But one thing many of us forget to protect is our license plate.
It might surprise you to learn that it only takes a Phillips head screwdriver to steal your plate. Fortunately, there’s an easy and inexpensive solution to make your license plate harder to steal.
Why Your License Plate is at Risk
Starting July 1 in Texas, new car buyers will no longer receive temporary paper tags. Instead, all new cars will come with metal license plates right away (WFAA). The problem with the old paper tags was that they were too easy to fake and often used on stolen cars to commit crimes.
Police are concerned that without the temporary tags, people’s regular license plates will be more at risk for theft. Thieves could use stolen plates on other vehicles for criminal activities, or they could use them to run up toll bills. Worse, your license plate could be linked to a crime if someone remembers your plate number.
While removing the paper tags is a good start, the problem of license plate theft isn’t solved completely.
How to Protect Your License Plate
There’s a simple and affordable solution to prevent your license plate from being stolen—Torx screws. These screws have a unique pattern that requires a special tool to remove. Without the right bit, thieves won’t be able to unscrew your plate.
I found a set of Torx screws on Amazon for less than $6, which includes the screws, the tool, and some other accessories. You can also check stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot for similar sets.
I’m planning to get a set for both my car and my fiancé’s daughter’s car. It’s a conversation worth having in your household too!
