Record-Breaking Heat Wave Set to Hit East Texas: What You Need to Know

Record-Breaking Heat Wave Set to Hit East Texas What You Need to Know

East Texas residents, brace yourselves — a scorching heat wave is heading your way, and it may just break century-old temperature records. Starting Wednesday, May 14, the cities of Lufkin and Nacogdoches are expected to experience temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, far above the usual for this time of year.

Record High Temperatures Expected in East Texas

According to forecasts, several days in the coming week could break heat records that date back over 100 years. Here’s what the temperature predictions look like:

  • May 14 – Forecast High: 94°F, Previous Record: 93°F (set in 1911)
  • May 15 – Forecast High: 95°F, Previous Record: 94°F (set in 1911)
  • May 16 – Forecast High: 94°F, Previous Record: 93°F (set in 2022)

These extreme temperatures are expected to affect not only East Texas but also Central Texas and the Texas Hill Country, including big cities like Austin and San Antonio.

Central Texas and Hill Country May See Temperatures Above 100°F

In south-central Texas, temperatures are expected to shoot up to 103–105°F between Tuesday and Thursday. This is nearly 8 degrees higher than previous record highs for some locations, which could make this heat wave one of the most intense early-season heat events in years.

This level of heat is not just uncomfortable — it can also be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and people working outdoors. Make sure to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and check on neighbours or family members.

When Will the Heat Wave End?

Weather models suggest that this intense heat will continue through the weekend, affecting most of Texas. A bit of relief is expected by Tuesday, May 20, when the temperatures are forecasted to drop closer to average for this time of year.

Is This the Start of a Very Hot Texas Summer?

The Climate Prediction Center says there is at least a 50% chance that Texas will experience a hotter-than-normal summer in 2025. While this current heat wave may be temporary, it could be a sign of what’s coming as summer progresses.

Fortunately, despite the high heat, rainfall for East Texas — especially the Pineywoods region — is expected to remain close to normal levels, according to long-range forecasts. This is good news as it may help prevent drought conditions, which are a common concern during hot Texas summers.
