Report: ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Centered on Kayce Dutton Planned

Report ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Centered on Kayce Dutton Planned

The Yellowstone universe is growing again! A new spinoff show focused on Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of John Dutton, is in development.

Fans of the original series will remember Kayce, played by Luke Grimes, as a complex character torn between his duties as a family man, a former Navy SEAL, and Livestock Commissioner. Now, it looks like his story will continue in a brand-new series set to air on CBS.

Kayce Dutton Returns as the Lead

Luke Grimes, who portrayed Kayce Dutton throughout the Yellowstone series, is reportedly set to return in this upcoming spinoff. His character was one of the most emotionally layered in the show—tough yet vulnerable, struggling to balance loyalty to his family and personal peace.

The new series will dive deeper into Kayce’s life, especially his past as a Navy SEAL. According to reports shared by Deadline, the show will heavily focus on this aspect of his background. This could mean more action, military-style storytelling, and maybe even missions tied to his special forces past.

The Series Will Be a CBS Procedural

What makes this spinoff different from the rest is its format. Unlike the original Yellowstone, which was a Western family drama, this new show is described as a procedural—similar to shows like NCIS or CSI. It will likely follow a case-of-the-week format, possibly combining military and investigative storylines with Kayce’s personal journey.

Even though the end of Yellowstone showed Kayce planning to step down as Livestock Commissioner, it wasn’t completely clear if he followed through. This new show might explore what comes next—whether he leaves his old job behind or gets pulled back in.

Familiar Faces Could Return

While no official announcements have been made, there’s a chance that Kayce’s on-screen wife Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille) and their son Tate (played by Brecken Merrill) might appear in the new series.

Their story was a central part of Kayce’s development in Yellowstone, and including them would help carry over emotional threads that fans are already invested in.

Part of a Growing Yellowstone Universe

This upcoming Kayce-focused show is just one of many Yellowstone spinoffs in the works. Fans have already watched 1883 and 1923, two successful prequels exploring earlier generations of the Dutton family. Currently, 1923 is in its second season on Paramount+.

Another spinoff, The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, is also in the pipeline. Filming reportedly wrapped in late 2024. There are also rumors of a series featuring fan-favorite characters Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), though details remain under wraps.

Additionally, there’s talk of a prequel set in 1944, and a possible new series based on the 6666 Ranch in Texas. This ranch was introduced in Yellowstone and was hinted to have its own story to tell.

What Fans Can Expect

With CBS taking the lead and MTV Entertainment Studios producing, the Kayce spinoff is expected to bring a mix of action, drama, and emotional storytelling. The shift to a procedural style might attract new viewers while still giving longtime fans a deeper look at one of the show’s most loved characters.
