As construction continues on Loop 88 in Texas, new lane changes are confusing many drivers—and it’s becoming a safety problem. After years of traffic flowing in one direction, some lanes have been flipped. Unfortunately, not everyone is adapting quickly, and this has led to dangerous situations, including drivers going the wrong way.
Construction Brings Change—And Confusion
For a long time, the westbound lanes of Loop 88 were closed, so drivers got used to using just one side of the road. Now that those lanes have reopened, traffic patterns have changed—but old habits are hard to break.
Some drivers are still using the loop the way they always have, leading to wrong-way driving—which is not only dangerous but also illegal. In fact, Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety) had to put up extra signs that say “Wrong Way” or “Do Not Enter” to stop people from making these life-threatening mistakes.
According to Everything Lubbock, drivers can get a traffic citation for going the wrong way. But more importantly, it puts everyone on the road at risk.
Police Urge Drivers to Stay Alert
The Lubbock Police Department (LPD) is reminding drivers to pay attention to road signs, especially in construction zones. Lane changes and detours can be confusing, but not noticing them could cost someone their life.
Always drive carefully, and if you’re unsure, slow down and double-check the signs before making a turn or entering a lane.
Wrong-Way Driving Is a Big Problem in Texas
Sadly, Texas had the highest number of wrong-way crash deaths in the United States in 2021. The state was responsible for nearly 20% of all wrong-way driving fatalities, according to the Carlson Law Firm.
The law firm also shared the main reasons people drive the wrong way:
- Driving under the influence (alcohol or drugs)
- Elderly drivers who may have slower reactions
- Drivers who are alone (no one to help navigate)
- Not familiar with the area
- Poor night vision or low visibility
- Ignoring road signs or traffic laws
- Trying to pass in unsafe conditions
- Driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
The most dangerous time for wrong-way driving accidents is around 2 a.m., when many bars are closing and people may be driving under the influence.
