San Antonio, Arlington Mayors Call on State Representatives to Oppose Tariffs That Threaten the Texas Auto Industry

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Arlington Mayor Jim Ross have joined forces to urge state representatives to protect Texas truck manufacturing jobs from the potential economic fallout of proposed federal tariffs.

Texas Auto Industry at Risk

The mayors expressed their concerns in a joint letter to lawmakers, warning that thousands of Texas jobs could be in jeopardy if the tariffs move forward.

Key points from their letter:

  • San Antonio: 3,700 workers build Toyota Tundras and Sequoias, and 5,600 employees work for Toyota suppliers in Texas.
  • Arlington: 5,200 workers build Yukons, Tahoes, Suburbans, and Escalades, with thousands more employed by GM suppliers across Texas.

Mayors Call for Immediate Action

The mayors stressed the urgency of the situation, criticizing a “wait and see” approach. They believe immediate action is needed to protect Texas’ economy and prevent job losses.

Quote from the letter:

“No amount of horsepower can overcome the economic chaos of a reckless tariff strategy that threatens Texas’ economic job engine that has been years in the making.”

Final plea to federal leaders:

“At a time when Texans are seeing no relief in the price of eggs or the cost of living, we look to our federal leaders to help ensure stability in the auto manufacturing ecosystems.”
