Country music star Morgan Wallen is ready for a fresh sound. In a rare and honest interview on the This Past Weekend podcast with his friend Theo Vaughn, Wallen opened up about being tired of using trap beats in his music.
He said it’s time to move away from that style and try something new, especially with his upcoming album I’m The Problem set to release on May 16.
“If I’m Tired of It, They’re Probably Tired of It”
Morgan Wallen didn’t hold back during the interview. He spoke honestly about how trap-style beats were a big part of his last album, but now he feels it’s time to let go of that sound.
“Last album, I had plenty of trap beats and stuff like that. This time, I was like, ‘Hey man, maybe let’s tone that down a little bit,’” he shared.
He added, “If I’m tired of it, they’re probably tired of it.” Wallen said he wants to keep the same energy and swagger, but without repeating the same old patterns.
Moving Away From Old Topics Too
It’s not just the trap beats that Wallen is moving away from—he also wants to explore new topics in his lyrics. He admitted that many of his past hits were about drinking whiskey and partying, but now he feels he has already written all he could about those themes.
“A lot of the things that were successful in the past were like whiskey drinking, all that stuff, and I’ve almost explored every angle of that that’s possible,” he said.
Wallen also revealed that he hasn’t stepped into a bar since his public incident at Eric Church’s Chief’s Bar in Nashville, where he threw a chair from the rooftop. That moment made headlines, and now he’s focused on a different path—both personally and musically.
Writing With a Clearer Vision
Morgan explained that while working on I’m The Problem, he teamed up with his close group of songwriters to bring a new vision to life.
“We had a good sense of what we were shooting for,” he said. “I had to work harder, just finding new angles and thinking up new ideas.”
It wasn’t easy, but Wallen said the effort to create something fresh has been worth it. With 37 songs in the new album, fans can expect a wider variety of sounds and stories.
A Rare, Honest Interview
Morgan Wallen doesn’t usually give many interviews, so fans were happy to see him open up in this one. His friendship with Theo Vaughn helped him feel comfortable enough to share how he’s really feeling about his music and where he’s headed next.
“I can tell when something’s getting tired, ya know?” he said, pointing out that he wants to stay ahead of the curve and keep evolving as an artist.
