Seized Fentanyl Was Sufficient to “Kill More Than 46,000 People”: 11 Arrested in a Significant Drug Bust in Idaho

Seized Fentanyl Was Sufficient to Kill More Than 46,000 People 11 Arrested in a Significant Drug Bust in Idaho

Eleven people in Idaho have been convicted in a large-scale federal drug trafficking case, Acting U.S. Attorney Justin Whatcott confirmed. The investigation, led by the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), uncovered a major fentanyl and methamphetamine distribution network that operated across southern Idaho.

The operation connected individuals in Idaho with a Mexico-based drug supplier, showing just how deeply international cartels can impact local communities in the U.S.

Investigation Traced Back to Early 2023

The case began in early 2023 when detectives from the Idaho State Police Department started investigating Austin Lee, who was believed to be a major distributor of fentanyl and methamphetamine in southern Idaho.

By July 2023, the case had grown significantly. According to David Reames, Special Agent in Charge at the DEA Seattle Field Division, the investigation extended to include Lee’s drug supplier in Mexico and a wider group of co-conspirators.

Reames stated that the operation used recent parolees, some of whom were recruited while still in prison, to help transport fentanyl from the U.S.-Mexico border to Idaho for local distribution.

Huge Amounts of Deadly Drugs Seized

During the investigation, law enforcement seized:

  • Over 48,000 fentanyl pills
  • Four pounds of methamphetamine

To highlight the seriousness of the case, Reames noted:

“Two milligrams of fentanyl is a potentially deadly dose. The fentanyl seized here had the potential to kill over 46,000 people—enough to fill the Boise State football stadium.”

Sentencing: Prison Terms and Probation

Of the 11 convicted, nine have been sentenced to prison, with terms ranging from 24 months (2 years) to 140 months (over 11 years). The other two individuals received multiple years of probation.

This case is being seen as a big success for both federal and state law enforcement working together to combat drug trafficking and organized crime in Idaho.

Governor Applauds Law Enforcement Efforts

Idaho Governor Brad Little praised the outcome and the strong collaboration between state and federal authorities.

“The goal of our Operation Esto Perpetua initiative is to equip law enforcement with the tools and training they need to keep Idaho safe,” Governor Little said. “The conviction of 11 drug traffickers proves that what we are doing is working.”
