Manhattan, Kansas – Residents across northeast Kansas should prepare for severe thunderstorms this evening. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 p.m. on Monday, with the possibility of strong storms capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the storms are expected to develop between Manhattan, Kansas, and St. Joseph, Missouri. The most serious threats include damaging winds and hail up to 1 inch in diameter.
Areas Most at Risk
Communities in counties like Riley, Brown, Jackson, and Doniphan should be on high alert. These areas may experience storm conditions that can cause:
Power outages
Downed tree branches
Dangerous travel, especially on US-36 and Highway 75
The storm zone covers a wide stretch—about 70 miles east and west of a line running from just northwest of St. Joseph to just south of Manhattan. Although tornadoes are not expected, the wind damage from these storms could be just as serious.
Safety Tips for Residents
People living in the watch area should:
Stay indoors during the storm
Secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and other loose items
Avoid unnecessary travel until the storm passes
It’s also smart to charge mobile phones and flashlights in case of a power outage and to stay tuned to local weather updates for new warnings.
What to Expect After 10 PM
While the severe weather threat is expected to lessen after 10 p.m., there may still be updates or new alerts issued during the evening. Keep an eye on local news or the official NWS website for the latest information.
