In a heartbreaking crime that shocked Washington, D.C., a 37-year-old man has been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend in cold blood. The tragic event took place in July 2021 and has left the local community deeply shaken.
What Happened That Night?
On the night of July 18, 2021, Dara Northern, a woman known for her joyful spirit, was getting ready to enjoy a night out with her best friend. Around 1:30 a.m., her friend arrived at her home on 4th Street NW to pick her up. But unknown to her, Idrissa Fall, her ex-boyfriend whom she had recently broken up with and asked to leave her home, was waiting outside.
As Dara walked towards the car and got into the passenger seat, Fall approached. Prosecutors said she ignored his attempts to stop her. As she closed the car door, Fall pulled out a gun and shot her in the head. He then ran away from the scene.
A Cold and Planned Crime
Authorities later revealed that Fall had turned off security cameras at Dara’s home before the shooting. However, cameras from neighbors’ homes captured him running from the area.
Dara’s friend, who was sitting beside her during the attack, told police that Fall made a comment involving a slur about gay people before shooting, suggesting he may have been angry about her friends or lifestyle.
Dara was rushed to the hospital, but doctors couldn’t save her. She was declared brain-dead and sadly passed away the same day.
The Court’s Verdict and Sentence
A jury found Fall guilty in January. He was convicted of first-degree murder while armed, using a gun during a violent crime, and having a gun illegally.
On top of his 50-year prison sentence, he will also have to spend five more years under strict supervision after his release. Since he is going to a federal prison, he will not be eligible for parole.
Why This Case Mattered
Prosecutors said Dara had been excited about starting a new chapter in life after her breakup. She was looking forward to a fresh start and had planned a fun night out to celebrate. Her best friend described her as being happy and light-hearted that evening — until everything changed in an instant.
This case is a harsh reminder of the dangers many women face after ending relationships, especially with partners who show controlling or violent behavior. The court’s strong sentence shows the seriousness of such crimes and aims to bring justice for Dara and her loved ones.
