The remains of Deon Lamont Watson have finally been returned to his family, bringing closure to a mystery that began when his ashes were discovered at the Wichita County Cemetery in late February.
Wichita County Sheriff David Duke confirmed that the urn containing Watson’s ashes was left at a pavilion in the cemetery, along with an envelope containing money.
After a brief investigation, officials determined that the ashes had been accidentally lost by Watson’s family and later placed at the cemetery by a well-meaning stranger.
How the Urn Was Lost
Sheriff Duke explained that Watson’s family had been moving and cleaning out a residence when the urn was mistakenly placed on a trailer.
Possible Explanation: The urn may have fallen off the trailer during the move.
What Happened Next:
- A Good Samaritan found the urn.
- Believing the remains needed proper care, they left it at the cemetery along with some money.
- A county worker later discovered the ashes while doing maintenance at the cemetery.
A Kind Stranger’s Gesture
The Wichita County Cemetery, located on 30th Street, is primarily used for indigent burials—those who cannot afford funeral services.
Although the anonymous person who left Watson’s remains included money, Sheriff Duke noted that it was not enough to cover a formal burial.
“They thought someone needed to take care of it,” Duke said.
