The Benson Iris Society Show, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed to April 26 after hailstorms in Wichita Falls caused significant damage to local irises. Mary Rhoads, president and show chair, announced the new date on Saturday, explaining that the storms left many of the irises in bloom “shredded”.
Hailstorm Damage Causes Postponement
The Wichita Falls area experienced strong hailstorms on April 4-5, which damaged many flowers that were already in bloom. According to Rhoads, the storms caused considerable harm to the irises, especially those in full bloom.
“Any iris that was in bloom got totally creamed, I mean, shredded,” Rhoads said.
Despite the damage, irises have a long blooming season, and Rhoads assured the public that more flowers would be ready by the new date.
New Show Date: April 26 at Trinity United Methodist Church
The show will now take place on April 26, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 5800 Southwest Parkway in Wichita Falls.
The event is free to the public and will feature a variety of bare-rooted and potted irises for sale. The show is also officially sanctioned by the American Iris Society, ensuring high-quality exhibits and plants.
