Shoplifting is a growing problem across the U.S., and Shreveport is no exception. But local police are taking strong action to stop it. A special team from the property crimes division of the Shreveport Police Department is working hard to catch those stealing from stores. Their goal is to reduce retail theft and bring repeat offenders to justice.
Undercover Police Working in Local Stores
While in some cities store employees have stopped confronting shoplifters, that’s not the case in Shreveport-Bossier. In fact, you might not even notice when undercover police officers are inside a local store, keeping a close watch. This week, such an operation led to the arrest of a repeat offender—the so-called “Meat Bandit.”
What Happened in the Store?
The incident took place at the Target store on Youree Drive in southeast Shreveport. During a planned retail theft operation, officers were quietly watching for suspicious activity. That’s when a man was seen stuffing packages of expensive meat into his pants.
Security staff from Target tried to stop him, but he ran. The suspect, Gabriel Williams, bolted out of the store and into the parking lot. However, police officers were quick to respond. Members of the property crimes unit chased and arrested him near the store.
Who Is Gabriel Williams?
Police say Williams is a repeat offender, well-known to law enforcement. He has a history of theft, with 16 prior arrests and 10 theft convictions already on record. He is now facing seven new felony theft charges as a habitual offender, along with one count of resisting arrest.
Williams is also suspected of being involved in at least six other theft cases involving stores like Target, Home Depot, and Lowe’s.
Police Promise to Keep Fighting Retail Theft
Shreveport Police say they will continue undercover operations in retail stores to catch thieves and prevent further losses for local businesses. They aim to hold repeat offenders accountable and deter new ones from stealing.
What Should You Do If You Witness Shoplifting?
If you ever see someone stealing from a store, report it to the police. Try to note details such as what the person looks like and what they stole—but do not put yourself in danger. Your report can help law enforcement crack down on theft in your community.
