The Social Security Administration (SSA) has delayed the start of a new identity verification rule that was originally planned to begin on March 31. Due to strong feedback from advocacy groups, lawmakers, and the general public, the new date for implementation is now April 14.
The delay is meant to give more time to address concerns about how the new rule might affect elderly and disabled people who may find it difficult to visit an office in person.
What Is the New SSA Policy?
The main change in the policy is that people who cannot verify their identity through the SSA’s website will now need to do it in person at a Social Security office. This has caused worry among many, especially senior citizens and people with disabilities, who may have trouble traveling or using online tools.
Who Is Affected by the Policy?
This rule mostly applies to those applying for retirement, survivor, or spousal/children’s benefits and people who want to update their direct deposit information. These individuals must either use their online “my Social Security” account, visit an SSA office in person, or call to set up an appointment.
However, there are exceptions to the rule. The in-person requirement does not apply to those applying for:
People applying for these programs can still verify their identity by phone if they don’t have online access.
Why Was the Policy Delayed?
The SSA decided to push back the implementation after groups like AARP and members of Congress raised serious concerns. They felt that the SSA was moving too fast with the change and didn’t consider how it might hurt people who are less able to travel or use digital services.
Bill Sweeney, AARP’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, said that trying to roll out such a big change with just two weeks’ notice was “extraordinary.” Nancy LeaMond, another top AARP official, also welcomed the delay and called for clearer communication and more public involvement before making such important changes.
What Should You Do If You’re Affected?
If you are applying for retirement or similar benefits and cannot use the online system, you should:
- Visit your nearest SSA office in person
- Or, call 1-800-772-1213 to book an appointment
If you’re applying for SSDI, Medicare, or SSI, you can still complete the identity verification process over the phone if online access is not possible.
