April 16, 2025, brings good news for a special group of retirees in the United States. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is sending out a retirement payment exclusively to what’s known as Retiree Group 3. This group will receive their monthly Social Security check today—and for some, the amount could be much higher than what they received in April 2024.
What Is the April 16, 2025, Social Security Payment?
The SSA schedules retirement payments on four different dates every month, depending on your birthday and the year you started receiving Social Security. Today’s payment is only for Group 3 beneficiaries, meaning not everyone will receive a check on April 16.
If you qualify as part of this group, you’ll see your money today—especially if you have Direct Deposit set up. This is the fastest and safest way to receive Social Security benefits.
Who Qualifies for the April 16 Social Security Check?
Only retirees who meet both of the following requirements are part of Group 3 and will receive payment today:
1. You started receiving Social Security after May 1997
- If your retirement benefits began after this date, you are in one of the groups scheduled for mid- or late-month payments.
2. Your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of any month
- Your birthdate helps determine which week of the month your payment is sent.
- If you meet both these conditions, then April 16, 2025, is your official Social Security payday this month.
What If You Don’t Use Direct Deposit?
If you haven’t signed up for Direct Deposit, your payment will still be sent—but it might take a few more days to reach you by mail. The Direct Deposit option ensures faster delivery and fewer delays. It’s recommended for all retirees who want to avoid waiting.

How Much Will You Get?
The amount you receive depends on how much you earned and paid into Social Security during your working years.
- The maximum benefit for 2025 can reach up to $5,108 per month.
- However, only retirees who worked for many years, paid maximum taxes, and delayed retirement to age 70 typically receive this amount.
- Most retirees will receive a lower payment based on their individual earnings history.
So, while the top amount is high, most retirees will get a figure closer to their usual monthly check.
What Happens If You’re Not in Group 3?
Don’t worry if you’re not part of this week’s payment group. The SSA sends payments based on a rotating schedule. Here’s how it works:
- Group 1: Those who began receiving benefits before May 1997 – Paid on the 3rd of each month.
- Group 2: Birthdays between 1st–10th – Paid on the 2nd Wednesday.
- Group 3: Birthdays between 11th–20th – Paid on the 3rd Wednesday (April 16 this month).
- Group 4: Birthdays between 21st–31st – Paid on the 4th Wednesday.
If you’re not in Group 3, your payment will arrive either earlier or later in the month depending on your group.
