In 2025, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program continues to help thousands of low-income people in the United States who are aged, blind, or disabled.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed the monthly benefit amounts and important date changes for May and June. These updates are important for those who depend on SSI to meet basic living needs.
SSI Payment Amounts for 2025
The SSA confirmed a 2.5% increase in SSI payments, starting from January 2025. This increase was based on the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) to help keep up with inflation.
In 2025, the monthly maximum SSI amounts are:
- $967 for individuals
- $1,450 for couples
This means that individuals receiving the full amount will receive a total of $11,604 across the year. However, remember that the amount you get can be less, depending on your income, living situation, and state supplements.
Payment Date Changes: What to Know for May and June 2025
Normally, SSI payments are made on the 1st of each month. For May 2025, that’s exactly what happens — the money will be sent on May 1st.
But here’s something important: Since June 1st, 2025, falls on a Sunday, the SSA will send June’s payment early — on May 30, 2025.
This does not mean an extra payment. It only means that you will receive two payments in May (for May and June), and no payment in June. This is a standard SSA procedure whenever the 1st of a month lands on a weekend or holiday.

What Is SSI and How Is It Different from Other Social Security Programs?
SSI is a federal assistance program designed for people with low income and few resources who are either:
- 65 years or older
- Legally blind
- Living with a long-term disability
The key difference between SSI and other Social Security benefits like SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or retirement benefits is that SSI does not require a work history or past tax payments. It is funded through general federal taxes, not Social Security payroll contributions.
This makes SSI especially important for people who were unable to work much or at all due to age or disability.
Who Qualifies for SSI in 2025?
To qualify for SSI, you must meet the following conditions:
- Have limited income and assets (savings, property, etc.)
- Be a U.S. citizen or a legal non-citizen with approved immigration status
- Live in the United States or its territories (you must not leave the country for more than 30 days in a row)
- Be in one of the eligible groups: elderly (65+), blind, or disabled
The SSA checks each application carefully. They will look at your financial documents, medical records, and where you live to confirm if you qualify.
How to Apply for SSI Benefits
Applying for SSI is simple and can be done in three ways:
- Online (only in some areas)
- By phone: Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213
- In person: Visit your nearest Social Security office
When you apply, you will need to show documents related to your income, bank savings, housing, and medical condition. If approved, your SSI payments can include back pay from the date you first applied.
SSI can also be combined with SSDI or retirement benefits if you meet the conditions for both. The SSA will help you figure out the best way to receive your benefits.
