Eligibility Requirements for SSDI in 2025

To qualify for SSDI in 2025, applicants must meet two key requirements:

Medical Requirement: You must have a medically certified disability that:

Lasts at least 12 months or is terminal.

Prevents you from engaging in substantial work activity (i.e., earning more than $1,620/month). For blind individuals, the income limit is $2,700/month.

Work Requirement: You must have earned 40 work credits by paying FICA taxes over your career. In 2025, one credit equals $1,810 in taxable income.

At least 20 of these credits must have been earned in the 10 years prior to the disability. If you are younger, the required credits may be reduced.

Applying for SSDI Benefits

If you meet the SSDI eligibility requirements, you can begin the application process by gathering the necessary documentation. This includes:

Medical records: Your diagnosis, treatment history, and functional limitations.

Proof of income and employment history.

Personal identification documents.

Applications can be submitted online, by phone, or at a local SSA office. Once submitted, the SSA will first review your work credits and income. If you meet these requirements, your case will be referred to the State Disability Determination Office (DDS), where your disability will be evaluated based on federal standards.

On average, the review process takes 3 to 5 months. If your application is denied, you can go through a four-step appeals process:

Reconsideration.

Hearing with a judge.

Appeals Council review.

Finally, a federal court hearing.
