In a deeply disturbing case out of southwest Miami-Dade County, Florida, a 42-year-old man named Zachary Perez has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse after allegedly beating, kicking, and choking his 6-year-old stepson using a dog collar and leash. Authorities say the abuse went on for two days before Perez was taken into custody.
What Happened in the Miami-Dade Home?
According to court documents and police reports, the abuse occurred between Thursday, May 8, and Saturday, May 10, 2025. Perez allegedly began by punching the child in the face multiple times with a closed fist, leaving the boy with serious bruises and visible injuries.
Later that same evening, the abuse escalated even further. Investigators said Perez placed a dog collar around the boy’s neck, attached a leash, and yanked it violently from behind — enough to lift the boy off his feet and pull him to the ground. The affidavit details how Perez reportedly repeated this act several times.
Additional Acts of Abuse
Unfortunately, the cruelty didn’t stop there. Law enforcement officials stated that Perez also kicked the young child in the stomach and beat him with a tree branch, often called a “switch.” These attacks left the child with significant injuries and were described by officers as severe and intentional harm.
On Saturday, Miami-Dade County deputies were called to the residence after someone reported the abuse. Upon arrival, they arrested Perez and transported him to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he is currently being held without bond.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Perez appeared in court on Sunday, May 11, where a judge ordered that he remain in custody without bond due to the seriousness of the charges. He has been charged with aggravated child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, a felony under Florida law. If convicted, he faces a lengthy prison sentence.
The court also appointed a public defender for Perez, and he pleaded not guilty to the charge during his initial appearance. A pretrial detention hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, where the court will review whether he can remain in jail until trial.

Even if Perez is later released on bond, the judge has already signed a no-contact order. This means he must stay at least 500 feet away from the victim at all times and is not allowed to communicate with the child in any form.
