Spotsylvania County, Virginia – In a heartbreaking incident, an 18-year-old high school athlete was fatally shot by a homeowner during what friends say was a TikTok prank gone wrong. The teen, identified as Michael Bosworth Jr., was a Massaponax High School senior and a lacrosse player.
The prank involved the viral “Ding Dong Ditch” game, where teenagers ring a doorbell and run away. However, this late-night prank turned deadly when a homeowner believed it was a burglary attempt and opened fire.
What Happened That Night?
The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2025, near Mackenzie Lane in Spotsylvania County. Deputies from the local sheriff’s office responded to a call reporting a possible burglary in progress.
When officers arrived, they found Bosworth with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly died from his injuries.
According to an affidavit from Detective Earle Swift, Bosworth was with two other teenagers, and all three admitted they were playing the doorbell prank for TikTok, not attempting to break in or steal. One of the other teens suffered a grazing wound, while the third was not injured.
Was It Just a Prank?
Friends and classmates of Bosworth insist the prank was meant to be harmless fun, part of a trend commonly seen on TikTok. They say the group had already visited several homes before the fatal shooting.
“They weren’t trying to hurt anyone. It was just a prank,” one classmate said.
The case is now under review by the Spotsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney, who will decide whether the homeowner will face any criminal charges. As of now, no charges have been filed.
A Tragic Day for the School
The tragedy occurred on the same day as the school’s prom. While the event went on as scheduled, the mood was somber. School authorities offered counseling and emotional support to students dealing with the loss of their classmate.
“We are heartbroken. Michael was a bright young man with a future ahead,” said the school principal.
