According to Sergeant Juan Gutierrez with Texas DPS, the wreck occurred just after noon on Friday, May 31, when a Chevrolet Malibu heading southbound rear-ended a semi-trailer that had pulled onto the shoulder.

The Malibu spun clockwise in the travel lane, hitting the trailer of another semi-trailer traveling south before coming to rest across both southbound lanes, according to Gutierrez.

The Malibu’s driver, a 48-year-old man from Fort Worth, was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital for his injuries. DPS states he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Malibu’s passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Bowie, was pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries. She was also not wearing a seatbelt, Gutierrez stated.
