Texas Braces for Dangerous Storms on Sunday: Lubbock, Amarillo, and More

Texas Braces for Dangerous Storms on Sunday Lubbock, Amarillo, and More

After a calm Saturday, the weather in Lubbock and much of the South Plains and Panhandle will take a turn for the worse on Sunday, with an increased threat of severe storms. From Lubbock to Amarillo and Midland to Texarkana, residents should be prepared for dangerous weather conditions as storms are expected to develop in the afternoon.

Severe Weather Risks for Sunday

The storms predicted for Sunday could be extremely hazardous. Lubbock faces an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, meaning the potential for intense conditions is high. For areas north of Plainview, the risk level reaches a 4 out of 5, marking a moderate risk. This is the same risk level we saw on Thursday and Friday, which brought severe storms to the region.

Sunday’s storms could bring a combination of heavy rain, large hail, high winds, and even tornadoes, especially in the Panhandle and Northern Texas. Areas such as Wichita Falls could see significant severe weather, making it even more important to stay alert.

What to Expect

Storms are expected to start in the late afternoon on Sunday, and the warm temperatures earlier in the day could fuel even stronger storms. If you live in or around Lubbock, Plainview, or Amarillo, the storm threat will be particularly high. Pay attention to your local weather alerts and be ready to take action when needed.

What to Do During Severe Weather

During a severe weather event, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Have a Plan: Identify a safe place in your home to shelter during a storm. A well-built interior room, away from windows or glass, is the best place to wait out the storm.
  • Stay Informed: Listen to weather alerts and local forecasts for up-to-the-minute updates. In Lubbock, NewsTalk 95.1 FM and 790 AM KFYO will air live severe weather coverage with KAMC’s Ron Roberts.
  • Know the Timing: Although the exact timing of the storms is still uncertain, the worst of the weather is expected to hit in the late afternoon. Make sure you’re ready in advance.
