Texas Man Charged With Intoxicated Manslaughter Following 17 Car Wreck

A man has been arrested following an unbelievable 17-vehicle crash in Austin, Texas, which killed five people, including a child and an infant.

On Thursday, March 16, a major crash in Austin killed five people and sent 11 others to the hospital. The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. and is not yet fully detailed.

According to Capt. Krista Stedman, public information officer for Austin-Travis County EMS, the team successfully evacuated all critical patients within 40 minutes, despite the complex nature of the scene.

14 Hours to Clear the Wreckage

The crash involved 17 vehicles and took nearly 14 hours to clear. “This incident was incredibly chaotic, and it was spread out over about a tenth of a mile,” Mr. Stedman said.

Photographs from the scene show incredible wreckage spread across a Texas highway. Car parts were strewn across lanes, wheels were completely detached from the frame, and front ends were smashed in.

Police have now released the name of the person responsible for the chaos. Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, faces five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, according to Austin police.
