An earthquake shook the Midland area this afternoon, about 15 miles southwest of Ackerly, the third this year in Texas. Have they almost become a regular occurrence?
Am I the only one who can’t recall ever experiencing an earthquake in Texas as a child? I was telling a friend about today’s earthquake, and they had no idea we’d ever had one here before. He must avoid social media and the news. He was stunned.
The first time I truly felt it in Lubbock was several months ago. It was a minor aftershock from a quake in the Permian Basin region.
I was sitting on my couch when I felt a small rumble. I assumed my phone was lost in the cushions and set to vibrate. I didn’t think much of it, got up, and went for a bubble bath. The same rumble occurred again, and as I watched ripples cut through the bath water, I realized it was an earthquake.
I live in a skyscraper, so it was a little alarming, but I’m brushing it off like everyone else.
Studies show a significant increase in earthquakes in our area since 2023. Do you think we’ll reach a point where they become much more serious? I hope not, but I won’t hold my breath.
