With high winds and low humidity in the forecast, Texas is facing an increased wildfire threat this week. On Monday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the activation of additional firefighting resources and crews to help combat potential wildfires across the state.
Why Is the Fire Danger So High?
Weather conditions: The Texas A&M Forest Service warns that the dry conditions, strong winds, and low humidity create the perfect environment for wildfires to spread quickly.
Time of year: Chief Matt Hohon of the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department explains that late winter and early spring are especially dangerous because dead, dry vegetation acts as fuel for fires.
Human impact: The Texas A&M Forest Service reports that 90% of wildfires are caused by people and are preventable. Officials are urging Texans to avoid open flames, be cautious with equipment, and delay burning brush or debris.
How Are Texas Fire Crews Preparing?
In Granbury, firefighters are preparing their trucks, updating the community on social media, and reminding residents to stay alert.
Hohon compared the current conditions to the ’L’ Fire two years ago, which burned thousands of acres in Hood and Erath Counties and led to evacuations.
“It’s still fresh on everybody’s mind,” Hohon said, recalling the devastation the fire caused.
What Can You Do to Prevent Wildfires?
- Avoid burning debris or brush—even small flames can ignite large fires.
- Use extra caution with equipment and vehicles—sparks can easily start fires in dry conditions.
- Pay attention to fire warnings—follow guidance from local fire departments and officials.
Be Prepared: Create a Wildfire “Go Kit”
The Texas A&M Fire Service advises Texans to prepare in case of an evacuation by putting together a “Go Kit” that includes:
- Important documents (IDs, insurance papers, financial records)
- Personal essentials (medications, clothing, hygiene items)
- Pet supplies (food, leash, carrier)
- Priceless items (photos, keepsakes)
Also, plan an evacuation route and follow the instructions of local officials.
