In the world of sports, we often see competition, but sometimes, we get a glimpse of something even more powerful—unity. The Boomtown Unified Track Meet in Burkburnett brought together students from across Texoma, not to compete against each other, but to stand side by side in the spirit of friendship and teamwork.
The Spirit of the Event
The Boomtown Unified Track Meet isn’t your typical track and field competition. It’s a special event where students, both with and without disabilities, come together as teammates in a series of track and field events.
This annual meet includes schools like Burkburnett, Holiday, City View, and Iowa Park, and is part of the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program.
At this event, the focus isn’t on winning, but on supporting each other, cheering each other on, and celebrating shared victories. It’s an event that shows how sports can bring people together, break down barriers, and teach the true meaning of inclusion and teamwork.
Real Stories of Friendship and Support
One student, Rustin Park, a 4th grader from Holiday, shared how much the event has meant to him. He expressed how grateful he is that his teacher, Ms. Berry, introduced him to the event, saying it makes him feel like an “actual boy.”
Rustin said that he owes much of his success and happiness to Ms. Berry, who has helped him feel confident and included in activities like the Unified Track Meet.
Rustin isn’t new to these events, but each time, they leave a lasting impact on him. He mentioned how he has made friends and even connected with teachers through the event. While it can be hard for him to open up to others, he knows the importance of giving it a try.
His honesty about feeling anxious sometimes shows how hard it can be to take that first step toward new experiences, but the support he receives makes all the difference.
Another friend Rustin has made is Cannen McCloskey, who has been helping him at the event for the last three years. Cannen has a kind and understanding outlook on the event, sharing that it’s not anyone’s fault if they have differences. He believes the event is a great way for students to connect, learn about each other, and build friendships.
The Power of Inclusion
The Boomtown Unified Track Meet is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of diversity and inclusion. For students like Rustin and many others, it can be challenging to put yourself out there, especially when facing the unknown. But events like these show that inclusion and friendship can break down walls of fear and uncertainty.
In a world where differences can sometimes lead to division, the event serves as a reminder that embracing those differences creates opportunities for understanding, growth, and unity. It highlights the importance of seeing beyond labels and recognizing the value of everyone’s unique abilities and qualities.
