As predicted, severe storms swept through East Texas this morning, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and widespread power outages. While the worst of the weather only lasted about an hour, it left behind a path of destruction, particularly in the Pineywoods region.
Storm Damage & Power Outages
The storms packed straight-line winds strong enough to cause significant damage across Deep East Texas. Reports indicate:
- Widespread wind damage in the Pineywoods
- Thousands still without power in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area as of 8 p.m.
- Alto Schools and Lufkin High School sustained significant storm damage
Wind Speeds Reached Tropical Storm Strength
According to Wunderground.com, multiple locations across East Texas recorded wind gusts reaching or exceeding tropical storm strength (39+ mph). The strongest recorded gust was 59 mph at Angelina County Airport.
