In the United States, Social Security payments do not arrive on the same day for everyone. While many retirees already received their April checks, there is one specific group that will not get their money until May 2, 2025. This delay is not due to any problem—it’s part of the official Social Security calendar.
If you or someone you know is still waiting for their next Social Security payment, it’s important to understand why and when the money is coming. Let’s look at who will receive the check on May 2 and why this group has to wait longer than others.
Who Will Get the May 2 Social Security Payment?
The payment on May 2, 2025, is for people in Group 1. This group includes retirees who began receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997. These beneficiaries always receive their payments in the first few working days of each month.
Unlike other groups whose payments depend on their birth dates, Group 1’s only requirement is the start date of their retirement benefits. If your benefits started before May 1997, then you are in Group 1, and your next payment will arrive on Thursday, May 2, 2025.
This schedule helps the Social Security Administration (SSA) manage the large number of payments it sends every month.
How Much Will the May 2 Payment Be?
The amount each person receives depends on a few personal factors:
- Number of years they worked and contributed to Social Security
- Employment history and income over the years
- The age at which they retired
In 2025, the maximum payment for retirement pensioners can go up to $5,108 per month. Those receiving Disability benefits (SSDI) could get a maximum of $4,018 per month. However, most people receive lower amounts based on their individual records.

SSI Payment Coming a Day Earlier – May 1, 2025
Before the Group 1 payment, there’s another important date to remember. On Wednesday, May 1, 2025, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment will be sent out.
SSI is a benefit designed for:
- Elderly individuals with very low income
- People with disabilities who have limited financial resources
This payment always arrives on the 1st of each month, unless that date falls on a weekend or holiday. In such cases, it is sent earlier. But for May 2025, the regular schedule remains unchanged.
What If You Receive Both SSI and Social Security?
Some people qualify for both SSI and Social Security retirement benefits. If you are one of them, you will receive two payments in early May:
- May 1 – Your SSI payment
- May 2 – Your monthly Social Security check
Receiving both payments is normal and allowed for those who meet the eligibility conditions.
