Rising country star Dillon Carmichael knows that to make it big in the industry, he must learn from those who have already achieved massive success. The “Son of A” singer recently shared how he carefully observes top country artists like Morgan Wallen, taking notes on their performances to improve his own. His dedication to studying the best in the business shows his commitment to growing as an artist.
Dillon Carmichael Secretly Studies Top Artists
Carmichael, in a conversation with Taste of Country Nights host Evan Paul, revealed that he frequently attends concerts without announcing his presence. Instead of going backstage or making connections, he prefers to quietly observe and take notes on what makes certain performers stand out.
“I go see shows all the time, and I have notes in my phone,” Carmichael explained. “Nobody even knows I’m there. I don’t even go backstage or anything. I don’t even wanna tell them that I’m there.”
When asked which artists he studies, Carmichael didn’t hesitate to mention Morgan Wallen, one of the biggest names in country music today.
What Dillon Carmichael Learned from Morgan Wallen
Carmichael shared some of the insights he gathered from attending a Wallen concert, pulling out his phone to reference his notes.
Engaging with the Crowd
One thing that stood out to Carmichael was how Wallen acknowledged his audience’s dedication.
“Notes from Wallen show. Attendance, 30K. Phoenix, Arizona. Thanking the fans for standing in the heat all day,” he recalled.
Carmichael admired this small but meaningful gesture. He explained that showing gratitude to fans for enduring tough conditions makes them feel valued.
Relating to the Audience
Wallen also connected with the crowd by sharing personal experiences.
“He said, ‘I had dreams of playing baseball someplace like this.’ It’s where the Diamondbacks play. Relate to them with sports,” Carmichael noted.
By mentioning his childhood dreams and tying them to the venue, Wallen made an emotional connection with the audience.
Making the Most of Stage Time
Another key takeaway for Carmichael was Wallen’s stage presence.
“He introduced his band and really showed his appreciation to them. Spent most of his time on the catwalk,” Carmichael shared.
According to Carmichael, Wallen walks out onto the catwalk and stays there for up to 45 minutes, engaging with fans without frequently retreating backstage.
“He don’t go back every song and get a drink or nothing. He goes out on the catwalk and looks his fans straight in the eye, for several minutes.”
The Downside of Being Too Close to Fans
While Wallen’s extended time on the catwalk helps him connect with fans, Carmichael pointed out a potential downside—fans feel encouraged to throw things at him.
“It sparks the thing where they feel more inclined to throw stuff at him, which then he acts like he’s upset about it, but at the end of the day, it ends up going viral.”
Carmichael jokingly added that maybe he should try spending more time on the catwalk himself, in hopes of getting a viral moment too.
