Tomato Recall Alert: Salmonella Risk Prompts Warning in 14 U.S. States

Tomato Recall Alert Salmonella Risk Prompts Warning in 14 U.S. States

Two popular brands of tomatoes sold in multiple U.S. states have been recalled due to the possible presence of salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week. Though no illnesses have been reported so far, consumers are advised to avoid or return the affected tomatoes as a safety precaution.

Which Tomato Brands Are Being Recalled?

1. Ray & Mascari Inc. Vine Ripe Tomatoes

Ray & Mascari Inc. is recalling its 4-count Vine Ripe tomatoes, which were sold at Gordon Food Service Stores across 11 states, including:

  • New York
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • Pennsylvania
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Missouri
  • Mississippi
  • Tennessee
  • Ohio
  • Wisconsin

These tomatoes were packed in plastic clamshell containers with a “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” label and “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc.” printed on them.

The recall was initiated after the grower, Hanshaw & Caping Farms in Immokalee, Florida, informed Ray & Mascari about possible salmonella contamination in a batch of tomatoes they had shipped and repacked.

2. Williams Farms Repack LLC Tomatoes

In a separate recall, Williams Farms Repack LLC is recalling tomatoes distributed to wholesalers in:

  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia

These tomatoes were distributed between April 23 and April 28, 2025.

For details on specific lots affected, consumers and retailers can check the FDA’s official website for recall updates.

What Is Salmonella and Why Is It Dangerous?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause serious foodborne illness. People infected with it may experience:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal cramps

For most healthy individuals, symptoms go away after a few days. However, for young children, elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems, salmonella can lead to more severe illness or even death in rare cases.

What Should You Do If You Bought These Tomatoes?

If you purchased any of the recalled tomatoes:

  • Do not eat them, even if they look or smell fine.
  • Throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them—especially if the packaging is unopened.
  • If you’ve already consumed the tomatoes and are feeling unwell, contact a doctor immediately.

The FDA has stated that no illnesses have been reported so far, but it urges all consumers to be cautious.
