Top Restaurants That Ought to Open in Lufkin and Fill Up Unoccupied Spaces

Back in February, we asked a fun question on Facebook: “What restaurant would you like to see open up in Lufkin?” Specifically, we were talking about the old Carl’s Jr. location at the intersection of Timberland Drive and S. 1st Street. The response was incredible—over 500 comments came in!

From long-lost favourites to big national chains, the people of Lufkin definitely had some strong opinions on where they want to eat next. While there’s no guarantee any of these restaurants are actually opening, it’s always fun to imagine—and maybe even start a conversation that could lead to something real!

Why This Question Was Asked

The idea behind the Facebook post wasn’t just to daydream—it was to create a sort of Lufkin restaurant wish list. With so many vacant buildings and lots in town (especially former restaurants), it made sense to ask: If we could bring back or introduce any restaurant to Lufkin, what should it be?

Some people suggested restaurants, others wanted non-food businesses, and a few mentioned concerns about traffic safety at that specific intersection. All good points!

Don’t Get Your Hopes Up—But Let’s Have Some Fun

Before we go any further, let’s be clear: most of these restaurants probably won’t come to Lufkin. Some chains have specific requirements for where they open stores—like being near a major interstate or only in metro areas. Others, like Ames Fried Chicken, are just long gone and unlikely to return.

Still, it’s fun to imagine what could go in those empty buildings. And who knows? Maybe one day, one of these suggestions will actually become a reality.

The #1 Most Requested Restaurant: Waffle House

No surprise here—Waffle House was by far the most popular pick among commenters. The classic, no-frills diner is loved for its all-day breakfast, hash browns, and laid-back atmosphere. We think it would be a perfect fit in a high-traffic area of Lufkin, especially one that’s active late at night.

Other Popular Restaurant Picks

While Waffle House topped the list, there were several other names that popped up repeatedly. Here are some of the most requested restaurants, along with suggested locations where they might fit in Lufkin:

  • Taco Cabana: Known for its breakfast tacos and patio vibes. A spot near Highway 59 could work—if they ever consider smaller towns.
  • Chick-fil-A (Another One): Some folks say Lufkin needs a second location. Maybe on the north side of town for better access.
  • In-N-Out Burger: A West Coast favourite, but they rarely open outside their main markets. Still, people would love to see it here!
  • Cracker Barrel: A popular pick for comfort food. The old Ryan’s location might suit them.
  • Golden Chick, Freddy’s, or Raising Cane’s: All favourites for quick bites. The former KFC location or a new spot on South 1st might work well.
  • Ames Fried Chicken: A nostalgic pick, though it’s highly unlikely to come back after being closed for over 15 years.

Let’s Not Forget the Local Scene

While national chains dominate the wish list, many also mentioned the importance of supporting local restaurants and small businesses already in Lufkin. Several great local places are doing amazing work with food, and any new additions should ideally complement the city’s growing food scene—not compete with it.
