Heat AdTri-State Heat Advisory Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia Face Sweltering Conditions Until 8 PM Fridayvisory in Effect for Ohio Valley Dangerous Heat Through Friday Evening

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Dangerous heat is gripping the Ohio Valley, with heat index values approaching 100°F and minimal relief expected overnight.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Heat Advisory, which will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for parts of eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia.

Areas Affected and Heat Risks

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s and 90s, with high humidity pushing the “feels like” temperatures near triple digits, particularly between noon and 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Cities such as New Philadelphia, Steubenville, Wheeling, Morgantown, Zanesville, and Kittanning are among those under the advisory. Overnight lows above 70°F will provide little relief, heightening the risk of cumulative heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups such as seniors and young children.

Health Risks and Precautions

The prolonged heat and humidity increase the risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Health officials recommend the following precautions:

Limit outdoor activity, especially during the hottest parts of the day (from noon to 6 p.m.).

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoid alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate you.

Check on vulnerable neighbors, especially those without air conditioning or who may have mobility issues.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and avoid direct sunlight when possible.

Consider early morning or evening activity to avoid the peak heat.

Short-Term Relief and Cooling Centers

There may be short bursts of afternoon storms that could offer brief cooling in isolated areas, but the widespread heat risks will persist. Cooling centers may be available in some of the affected counties. Local emergency managers advise residents to check municipal websites for updates on locations and operating hours.

Extended Heat Risk

If conditions continue into the weekend, Heat Advisories may be extended. It is important to stay tuned to the National Weather Service or local media for any updates or additional warnings.
