A tropical depression off the coast of northeast Florida is set to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to parts of Georgia and the Carolinas through the holiday weekend, continuing into Monday.
The National Weather Service in Atlanta reports that the system, called Tropical Depression Three, is moving slowly northward. Although it is not expected to strengthen much, it will still bring rain to areas like Macon and Augusta in Georgia, as well as Columbia and Charleston in South Carolina.
What to Expect
As of Friday at 5 p.m., the storm was located at 30.8°N, 79.0°W with sustained winds of 35 mph. It’s moving slowly, at only 2 mph.
Georgia: Localized downpours and occasional lightning are possible in east-central Georgia, including Macon and Augusta, starting Saturday afternoon.
South Carolina: Expect off-and-on showers in Columbia and Charleston through Sunday evening.
North Carolina: Southern counties may also experience rain as the system weakens by Monday morning.
While no severe weather is expected, rainfall could be heavy at times, especially during July 4th weekend activities.
