Danville, Virginia – A Flood Watch is now in effect for much of Southside and eastern Virginia through Monday morning, as Tropical Depression Chantal brings heavy rainfall to the region.
Rainfall and Flash Flood Risk
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg forecasts 1 to 2 inches of rain, with localized totals possibly exceeding 3 inches. The heaviest rain is expected to fall this afternoon through early Monday, raising the risk of flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and places with poor drainage systems.
Areas Most at Risk
Communities in the southeastern Piedmont, especially Danville, South Boston, and Reidsville, are at a slight risk for excessive rainfall, with a level 2 out of 4 rating for rainfall intensity. Flash flooding could occur rapidly, particularly in low-lying areas, creeks, and roads prone to flooding.
Safety Precautions
Avoid driving on water-covered roads. If you encounter flooded roads, remember the key advice: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”
Flood-prone areas, such as underpasses in Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Mecklenburg counties, are expected to see rapidly rising water.
Secure outdoor items, clear storm drains, and charge devices in case of power outages.
Ongoing Alerts and Additional Updates
The Flood Watch and rain alerts will remain in effect through early Monday, with additional advisories potentially issued if rainfall intensifies overnight. Stay informed and prepared as the storm continues to impact the region.
