Trump Claims He 'Could Not Care Less' About Foreign Automakers Raising Costs Due to Tariffs

President Donald Trump gave a wide-ranging interview to NBC News on Saturday, March 29, 2025, where he addressed major issues including new tariffs on foreign cars, the recent Signal app controversy, and his strong interest in annexing Greenland.

Speaking from Florida while golfing with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, Trump dismissed criticism and doubled down on his policies, insisting they are good for American jobs, national security, and global strength.

“I Couldn’t Care Less” About Car Prices, Says Trump

Trump made headlines this week by announcing 25% tariffs on all foreign-made vehicles and parts, a move that has sparked global concern.

Asked if he was worried automakers might raise prices, Trump replied:

“I couldn’t care less. If prices go up on foreign cars, people will start buying American-made cars. We have plenty.”

Trump insisted the new policy will benefit companies that manufacture cars in the U.S., and said the tariffs will be permanent, unless other countries offer “something of great value” in return.

USMCA-compliant auto parts will remain tariff-free for now, according to the White House, but this may change once a formal process is in place.

Trump Defends Officials in Signal Group Chat Leak

President Trump also commented on the Signal app group chat incident, where a journalist was mistakenly added to a private conversation about military strikes on Houthi militants in Yemen.

Despite criticism—even from allies—Trump stood by National Security Adviser Michael Waltz and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who were involved in the chat.

“I don’t fire people because of fake news,” Trump said. “We had a tremendously successful strike. That’s what matters.”

“I don’t even know what Signal is. I don’t care. This is just a witch hunt,” he added, calling media coverage of the leak “nonsense.”

Greenland on Trump’s Radar Again

In one of the interview’s more surprising moments, Trump repeated his goal of annexing Greenland, calling it a matter of international security.

“We’ll get Greenland. 100%,” Trump said. “There’s a good chance we can do it peacefully, but I won’t take anything off the table.”

His comments followed Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Greenland, where he criticized Denmark’s handling of the island and praised U.S. military presence at Pituffik Space Base.

Trump dismissed concerns about what message the move would send to other global powers like Russia and China, saying:

“I don’t think about that. Greenland is a separate issue. It’s about peace and protecting the world.”
