Elon Musk, one of the world’s richest men and head of Tesla, SpaceX, and the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is now facing serious concerns from President Donald Trump’s top advisors.
Reports suggest that White House officials are questioning Musk’s behaviour and whether he is fit to handle such a high-level government role.
Concerns About Musk’s Behaviour in Meetings
A recent Rolling Stone report says several senior officials in the Trump administration have walked out of meetings with Musk. They have even asked each other if he was high during discussions.
Some officials even joked about drug-testing Musk, although the SpaceX legal team insists that he undergoes regular and random drug tests at his company and has never failed any test.
Musk himself reportedly agreed with the idea of mandatory drug testing for all federal employees.
Elon Musk’s Role in the US Government
After Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, Elon Musk was brought in as the chief of the DOGE, a new department designed to make government more efficient by cutting waste and streamlining operations.
But his leadership style has been called “reckless” after he fired tens of thousands of workers. One controversial move was a mass email asking federal workers:
“What did you do last week?”
He reportedly threatened to fire anyone who did not respond.
Musk’s Fallout with Peter Navarro
Musk also made headlines after publicly clashing with Trump’s senior trade advisor, Peter Navarro. After Navarro referred to Tesla as just a “car assembler” in a CNBC interview, Musk responded by calling him a “moron” on X (formerly Twitter).
This marks one of Musk’s first serious disagreements with the Trump administration, which is known for demanding loyalty.
Allegations of Drug Use
The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk has allegedly used illegal drugs like LSD, cocaine, Ecstasy, and mushrooms — something that worried board members of his companies.
However, Musk denies using any illegal drugs, except for his prescribed use of ketamine — a medication commonly used in hospitals and increasingly studied as a treatment for depression.
He has stated:
“I don’t drink and don’t know how to smoke pot.”
While Musk’s efficiency mission aligns with Trump’s goal to transform the federal government, growing concerns inside the White House may lead to more internal conflicts.
His massive political spending — $290 million in support of Trump’s 2024 campaign — has so far helped him gain power, but whether he can keep it is still unclear.
