Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a monthly benefit program in the United States for people who can’t work due to a medical condition. Managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSDI gives financial support to disabled individuals who have worked and paid Social Security taxes.

In June 2025, payments followed a fixed schedule, and here’s everything you need to know—from how to qualify to how much you can get.

What Is SSDI and Who Can Get It?

SSDI helps people who have serious health problems that stop them from doing substantial work. To get SSDI, your disability must last for at least 12 months or be expected to result in death. This program is only for people who worked jobs covered by Social Security and earned enough credits through their employment.

Most people need 40 credits, with at least 20 earned in the last 10 years before becoming disabled. Younger applicants may need fewer credits depending on their age.

How the SSA Decides If You’re Eligible

The SSA checks every application carefully. Here’s how they decide if you qualify:

  • First, they check if you’re currently working and making above a certain income (called the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limit). If you are earning more than this limit, you might be disqualified.
  • Next, they look at your medical condition. If it’s listed as a qualifying disability or it clearly stops you from working, you move to the next step.
  • Then, they check if you can still do your past jobs. If not, they assess whether you can do any other job based on your age, education, and work history.
  • They base their decision on your medical records, work history, and forms filled out by you and your doctors.

SSDI Payment Dates in June 2025

The SSA paid SSDI beneficiaries in June 2025 according to their birth dates:

  • June 3: For those receiving benefits since before May 1997.
  • June 11 (2nd Wednesday): For people whose birthdays fall between 1st and 10th.
  • June 18 (3rd Wednesday): For those born between the 11th and 20th.
  • June 25 (4th Wednesday): For people born between 21st and 31st.

If your payment is late, the SSA suggests waiting at least three business days before contacting them. Most delays happen due to bank processing times.

How Much Does SSDI Pay in 2025?

The average SSDI payment in June 2025 was $1,537. However, the exact amount depends on how much and how long you’ve worked and paid into Social Security.

If you’ve worked for 35 years or more with a high income, your monthly SSDI check could go up to $4,018.

Retired beneficiaries who receive SSDI had their payments adjusted due to the 2.5% COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustment) in January 2025. They now receive between $1,915 and $1,999.97 per month on average.
