When asked for his thoughts on Taylor Swift, Vince Gill was candid.
“She is awesome. “I’m crazy about her,” Gill told the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in a wide-ranging interview earlier this month.
Gill sat down for an hour-long interview with the staff at his home state’s Hall of Fame, and Swift’s name came up when he was asked if he had ever worked with the country-turned-pop superstar.
Vince and Swift may seem like an unlikely pairing, but he claims to have not only met her, but also covered one of her songs.
“I did the CMA Awards with her one year. Myself and Alison Krauss performed an acoustic version of her song ‘Red,'” he recalls.
He also discusses her controversial appearances at NFL games to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. “I’ve always been crazy about her and I just laugh when everybody gets so uptight when she goes to football games,” says Gill.
“What’s wrong with you?” he said, posing a question to football fans who are annoyed by Swift’s constant presence on the jumbotron while she is in the stands. “Someone asked, ‘What do you think about her’? I said, ‘Hell, they don’t cut away to her as much as Jerry Jones at Dallas Cowboys games — what’s the big deal?'”
Gill simplified the Swift and Kelce relationship: “It’s just a girl likes a guy and they’re going to a ballgame,” he said. When he puts it that way, their relationship sounds very relatable to almost anyone.
Gill continued to praise Swift, saying, “She’s one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.” “She is stunningly beautiful.”
What is it about Swift that has people so obsessed with her? Gill had an answer: “There are only a few people who have that charisma. They own a room. It is fascinating to watch. “I am a wallflower.”
“The scrutiny that that much popularity is under is staggering.”
The country music legend compared Swift’s obsession to that of Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson: all eyes on her at all times.
