Waco, Texas Man Freed After Falsely Accused of Felony Assault

Nikolas Sedillio, a man from Waco, Texas, was jailed for nearly a year after being charged with felony assault and family violence. However, he never committed the actual crime. Here’s what we know at the time of writing.

What Were The Beginnings Of The Case?

According to KWTX, Jasmine Vansickle reported an assault to police in January 2024 at Trenwood Apartments in Waco. Police arrested Sedillio a month after Vansickle, the mother of Sedillio’s children, and other witnesses reported the crime. However, law enforcement did not have video evidence of the crime, which caused some issues.

Sedillio was very confused at the time of his arrest, telling KWTX:

“I received a text message from the mother of my child. She claimed the cops were outside. ‘I pressed charges against you. They asked if I could go outside to talk to them, and when I did, they said, ‘put your hands behind your back, you have a warrant out for your arrest.'”

What Changed Which Led To Sedillio Being Released From Prison?

Sedillio’s newly appointed lawyer, Jessenia Ruiz, was able to obtain video footage of the incident that occurred at the complex. According to KWTX, Sedillio was not identified in the video. Sedillio’s charge was dismissed, but questions arose about Vansickle’s original statement.

According to KTWX, Vansickle told law enforcement the same story twice, once in writing and again in testimony to a Waco police detective. Vansickle was taken into custody and charged with making a false report to a peace officer. Waco Police also issued a statement on the matter:

“Providing false information to any peace officer is a criminal act that may result in legal consequences. False reports can derail investigations, endanger innocent people, and delay justice for those who truly need it.

We urge all members of the community to be responsible when reporting incidents. If you believe a crime has occurred, please provide truthful and accurate information so that we can protect and serve the City and its residents.

As this is a developing story, we will provide additional information as it becomes available.
