Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is in for a taste of early summer weather to finish out the workweek, with unseasonably warm temperatures and sunshine expected Friday.
However, the calm won’t last long. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Northern Indiana has issued a Level 2 of 5 (Slight Risk) for severe weather late Friday night, with strong storms possible after 9 p.m..
Residents across Fort Wayne, the I-69 corridor, and surrounding areas are encouraged to stay weather-aware, especially if they have travel or outdoor plans Friday evening.
Friday: Warm and Breezy Before Storms Arrive
Friday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 70s, making it feel more like late May than mid-April. Winds will also pick up slightly throughout the day, adding to the spring-like atmosphere.
But the warm air moving into the region is part of the same system that could bring unstable conditions by nightfall.
When to Expect Storms
Thursday Afternoon: A slight chance (20–30%) of light showers, especially near I-69.
Thursday Night: Showers become a bit more likely but remain mostly scattered.
Friday Night (After 9 p.m.): A stronger wave of showers and thunderstorms is expected.
Some of these storms may be severe, with the potential for:
- Damaging wind gusts
- Isolated hail
- Heavy downpours
The greatest risk window will be late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Residents should prepare in advance, as nighttime storms can be particularly dangerous due to limited visibility and sleeping hours.
Temperatures Stay Mild Despite Storms
Even with the storm system moving through, overnight temperatures will stay relatively mild, with lows in the mid-40s across the region. The warmth will linger into early Saturday before cooler air moves in behind the front.
Preparedness Tips for Friday Night Storms
- Secure outdoor items like patio furniture, garden tools, or decorations before sunset.
- Charge your phone and check flashlights or weather radios in case of power outages.
- Review your emergency plans, especially if severe weather warnings are issued overnight.
- Stay informed by checking updates at weather.gov/iwx or tuning into NOAA Weather Radio.
Even though spring storms are common in Indiana, every storm system is different, and preparation is key to staying safe.
