Country singer Caylee Hammack has a fairly simple backstage request—batteries, gum, and a veggie tray to snack on after her performances. However, there’s one vegetable that could cause an embarrassing moment onstage if she eats it before she sings.
In a recent interview with Taste of Country Nights’ Evan Paul, Hammack admitted that eating broccoli before a show gives her serious reflux issues—leading to unexpected burping while performing her emotional ballad Small Town Hypocrite.
Why Broccoli is a No-Go Before a Performance
While vegetables are generally a healthy choice, they can sometimes cause digestive issues, especially when singing is involved. Hammack shared that if she eats broccoli before a show, she ends up burping—always during “Small Town Hypocrite.”
The irony? Small Town Hypocrite is one of the most emotional moments in her setlist. The song is deeply personal, based on her real-life heartbreak. Having burps interrupt such an emotional song would definitely be an awkward experience!
The Story Behind Small Town Hypocrite
Hammack wrote Small Town Hypocrite about a heartbreaking past relationship. According to The Boot, she gave up a college scholarship to stay in her small Georgia hometown with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, he eventually broke her heart, telling her he “needed space”—only for her to later discover he had moved in with another woman and her three children.
While the breakup was painful, it ultimately pushed Hammack to move to Nashville and pursue her music career. Now, the song serves as a powerful reflection on that experience and a reminder of how far she has come.
With such a deeply personal connection to the song, it’s no wonder Hammack wants to avoid any unexpected interruptions—especially from broccoli-induced burps!
Caylee Hammack’s Busy 2025 Tour Schedule
Fresh off her new album Bed of Roses, Hammack is gearing up for a packed tour schedule in 2025. She’ll be joining Stephen Wilson, Jr. on tour this spring and heading overseas for an international tour. One of the highlights will be opening for Eric Church at London’s Highways Festival.
With so many performances lined up, it looks like Hammack will be avoiding broccoli backstage for the foreseeable future!
