LOS ANGELES, CA — Jane Fonda made a light-hearted comment about the Academy Awards after Barbra Streisand was chosen to honor Robert Redford during the In Memoriam segment of the ceremony.
Fonda, who shared a deep personal and professional connection with the late actor, jokingly pointed out that she had more to say than Streisand, given their long history together.
Fonda’s Playful Critique
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fonda quipped, “I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford? She only made one movie with him, I made four! I have more to say.”
Fonda shared a deep admiration for Redford, describing him as “the most gorgeous human being” with “great values.” She also praised Redford’s contributions to the film industry, emphasizing how he “changed movies” and played a significant role in lifting up independent cinema.
Fonda and Redford’s Long Friendship
Fonda and Redford’s professional bond began in 1967 when they starred together in Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park”. Over the decades, their bond only deepened, and they collaborated on several films. Fonda was visibly emotional upon hearing the news of his passing.
In a statement shared after his death, Fonda expressed her grief: “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for,” she said.
Streisand’s Tribute to Redford
Barbra Streisand, who starred opposite Redford in the iconic “The Way We Were”, also shared her tribute after his passing. Streisand reflected on their on-screen chemistry and the connection they shared off-screen.
“Every day on the set of ‘The Way We Were’ was exciting, intense, and pure joy,” she said. “We were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them! Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie.”
Streisand remembered Redford as “charismatic, intelligent, intense, always interesting,” and praised him as “one of the finest actors ever.” She also recalled a touching memory of their final meeting, where they discussed art and promised to send each other their first drawings.
