Man killed by his ex-girlfriend's teen brother after their relationship went 'sour' and they broke up; mother says he 'shielded' her from hail of bullets: cops

A 19-year-old Missouri teen, Ke’Montae Phillips, has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action after shooting and killing his sister’s ex-boyfriend in Kansas City on March 10, 2024.

Phillips allegedly used an automatic rifle with a red laser to target the victim, who was killed as he tried to shield his mother from the gunfire. The shooting occurred after the victim and Phillips’ sister had broken up.

Details of the Incident

According to police, Phillips had ongoing issues with the victim after the breakup. A probable cause affidavit reveals that Phillips had confronted the victim a week earlier when he and his mother were walking together, making comments about the relationship “going sour.”

On the day of the shooting, the victim and his mother were walking near 55th Street and Chestnut Avenue when Phillips appeared and opened fire. The victim reportedly told his mother that “they are following me,” though she could not get a clear explanation of what he meant.

The affidavit states that the victim had a rifle tucked into his pants. When Phillips approached, he allegedly asked, “you clutching?” to which he produced a rifle-style weapon with a red laser and began firing.

Victim Shields His Mother

As Phillips fired at them, the victim reportedly shielded his mother while they fled on foot. Sadly, he was struck by the gunfire during the escape. The mother then performed CPR on her son while neighbors came outside to assist.

Police recovered at least 35 shell casings from the scene, and surveillance footage from city cameras and dashcams captured the shooting and Phillips following the victim and his mother.

Phillips’ Arrest and Denial of Involvement

Phillips was arrested and later shown photographs and screen grabs from the surveillance footage. Initially, Phillips denied being involved, claiming the person in the photos looked like “his twin.”

However, when shown a picture of the victim, Phillips allegedly recognized him, saying, “that’s the guy that got murdered.”

Phillips is currently being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 15, 2024.
