New Mexico’s weather kicks off cool and quiet this morning, but temperatures are set to climb rapidly, heading toward summer-like levels by the afternoon.
Rapid Warm-Up Expected
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, temperatures are expected to rise to 91°F today under clear skies and low humidity, which will be around 21%. While winds will remain light in the morning, the dry air will contribute to increased fire danger across central New Mexico.
By midday, areas in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and along the I-25 corridor will heat up quickly. Sidewalks, parking lots, and desert terrain will radiate heat into the afternoon.
Meteorologists recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours and staying hydrated to avoid heat-related issues.
Slight Relief on Sunday, But Heat Returns
Sunday will offer slight relief, with highs near 89°F and dry conditions continuing. By Monday, temperatures will dip briefly to 83°F, but the heat will return quickly. Tuesday, March 24, is expected to bring highs back near 90°F, reinforcing this early-season heat trend.
Prolonged Warm Weather Expected
Meteorologists are tracking a strong ridge across the western U.S. that is expected to keep storm systems away, allowing heat to build each day. The ridge will continue to push temperatures upward, contributing to a prolonged period of warm weather.
Travel Tips for Drivers
With rising pavement temperatures, drivers should stay alert for fatigue, especially during afternoon travel. It is also a good idea to keep water in your vehicle and check tire pressure regularly as the heat can cause tire blowouts or issues with road traction.
