Christopher Milke, a 53-year-old man from Nebraska, has been sentenced to two life sentences after being convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his longtime partner, Tammy Leslie, and the subsequent hostage situation involving their two children.
Milke was also convicted on multiple other charges, including kidnapping, false imprisonment, and tampering with physical evidence.
The Tragic Incident
The tragic events took place on September 8, 2024, when Milke shot Leslie multiple times in the head and chest in the early morning hours. According to police reports, Milke’s 19-year-old daughter called 911 after returning home around 1:30 a.m. and seeing her father, who admitted to killing her mother.
The couple’s 11-year-old son was also in the house at the time and heard the gunshots. Milke reportedly ordered his son to hand over his phone and then locked the exits to the home, preventing the children from leaving.
Milke had previously suspected Leslie of infidelity, and authorities believe this may have been the motive behind the murder. Milke had reportedly been screwing the exits of the house shut for about a month before the incident.
Hostage Situation and Police Response
Following the 911 call, police responded quickly. The daughter took back her phone a few hours later after Milke had fallen asleep, and authorities decided to breach the home to rescue the children.
At 6:20 a.m., police entered the home and safely rescued the two children. Milke was found in possession of a 9mm pistol when he was taken into custody.
Leslie was found dead in the couple’s bedroom, with multiple gunshot wounds.
Courtroom Outbursts and Sentencing
During his sentencing, Milke showed no remorse, repeatedly interrupting the judge, Gage County District Judge Rick Schreiner, while he read the sentence. Milke also expressed his dissatisfaction with the trial and claimed that evidence was missing.
At one point, Milke said, “What happened in that room that night, I wish my kids believed in me like I believe in them. It wasn’t murder, and that’s all I’m gonna say.”
Judge Schreiner responded firmly, saying, “‘I finally killed somebody.’ Those are your words as you went to get another beer out of the refrigerator. This isn’t a whodunnit, Mr. Milke. It’s a you-dunnit.”
Milke was sentenced to two life sentences plus additional decades in prison.
