'Had just become a grandmother': Man on probation identified as 'jealous ex' kills woman and her partner outside Walgreens in a hail of gunfire, police say

A Florida man, Christian Barrios, 32, is behind bars and facing two counts of first-degree murder after a jealous rage led to the deaths of Melissa Wood, 46, and Jason Chatham, 42, in a tragic shooting on the night of March 13, 2025, in Ponte Vedra Beach, a suburb of Jacksonville.

The Shooting Incident

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to multiple 911 calls about shots fired at a Walgreens pharmacy located on the corner of Palm Valley Road. Both victims, Wood and Chatham, were transported to nearby hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.

The shooting is believed to be the result of romantic envy, with Barrios allegedly targeting Wood over perceived infidelity. The defendant reportedly got a ride from his mother, asking her to take him to the location where he believed his ex-girlfriend was meeting another man.

After seeing Wood’s car, Barrios exited the vehicle and opened fire. The mother recalled hearing gunshots before calling 911.

Arrest and Criminal Background

Barrios was quickly identified and tracked by K-9 units to a golf course owned by the PGA Tour. The following day, he was arrested in Nassau County after stealing a BMW, crashing the car, and fleeing on foot into the woods.

The sheriff described Barrios as a known criminal who had been released on probation and was committing another violent felony.

Sheriff Rob Hardwick expressed frustration, saying, “Here we are dumping all these resources, and families are going to mourn two people that were shot and killed in a parking lot of Walgreens over a domestic violence situation.”

Victim’s Family Reactions

Wood’s family, devastated by her death, described her as a kind, generous, and compassionate person. Her brother, Jeremy Hackward, wrote on a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her funeral and other expenses: “Melissa was such an amazing, outgoing, generous, and compassionate person.

She never judged anyone and would help a stranger even if she wasn’t in a place to do so herself.”

Wood’s daughter spoke out, disputing the claim that her mother was unfaithful. She shared her grief and emphasized her mother’s ability to love and raise her children well: “She had a lot of love to give.

And she always knew what to do and what to say, even when she didn’t know. I just had a baby, he just turned one, and I would love to raise him the way my mom raised me.”

Chatham’s niece, Aliya Jade, also honored her uncle on social media, writing: “I love you forever, and I hope you’re dancing in the sky having the best family reunion there is.”

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Barrios faces the following charges:

  • Two counts of first-degree murder
  • Burglary of an occupied dwelling
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Shooting into a conveyance
  • Grand theft of a motor vehicle

He is currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
